Guinness Foreign Extra Tasting Notes

It all starts with fruity and caramelized flavors, followed by smoky notes and a lively bitterness.

Foreign Extra Stout is an unparalleled beer, with an assertive, singular and striking character. A frank attack. A bitter and balanced beer. To be appreciated for its intensity and its capacity to refresh.

The higher doses of hops, previously roasted barley and the higher percentage of alcohol once allowed better conservation of the beer, which helped it to cope with long sea journeys. Today, these characteristics produce a bold taste and flavor profile like no other.

Discover the history of Guiness Foreign Extra:

It all started at the beginning of the 19th century, in 1801 to be precise, with Arthur Guinness who developed a recipe for a beer intended to travel on British ships.

Brewed with more hops and a higher alcohol content to make it easier to store during multi-week trips to the tropics, the recipe produced a powerful beer with a complex, fruity, sweet and sour flavor.

Originally known as West India Porter, it later took on the Foreign Extra Stout label. The recipe has evolved over time but while retaining this beer's identity and typicality which have made it famous all over the world.
